I’ve had success in attracting the Pipevine swallowtail in Western Iowa by planting Virginia snakeroot, which is a smallish non-invasive woodland native (shade-loving). It is not a plant normally offered by nurseries, but I will have plants available as rootstock this fall (2007) for those butterfly enthusiasts who wish to attract PVS to their gardens.
