Yes, this species is quite sexually dimorphic….very interesting differences. They usually sit with their wings open, and it’s hard to get a shot of the underside, but I was lucky to get a shot of both sexes, in both poses…if only I could always get that!
These two are gorgeous! I captured one very similar on our vacation in Croatia…I have quite a lot photos of butterflies from this year and I really have to edit them and publish them…I’m so behind! If I didn’t see your butterfly blog I would probably keep them for myself and I don’t see the point of that, because i rarely look my photos on the computer…
Mojca, I’m looking forward to seeing all of your butterflies from your vacation, and glad to see your new blog! It’s lovely. I originally started this blog as a way to keep track of all the butterflies that came to our garden in Texas each year . And then I got hooked, and it took off from there, and I started photographing butterflies everywhere I live and go.
I am also so behind! I feel like I am always behind, but my goal is to catch up on all photos and all blogs by the end of December. I am going to start 2015 not behind! :)
I also started in our garden and now everywhere we go I’m looking for butterflies to take some photos…I was surprised how many different species of these beautiful creatures exist!!!
About my new blog…of course it’s lovely…it almost looks like yours ;) I was looking for a free template that would look pretty much like yours, because it’s good if you have thumbnails on the first page for a butterfly theme…
Good luck with your goal!:)
There are so many butterflies, and they are often all around and no one pays attention! That is one of the reasons I love photographing them. Some are so small, and move so quickly that you could never really appreciate their beauty unless you looked at a photo. I am so glad you will be blogging the butterflies where you live. I will be very interested to see them all. And I agree, the thumbnails on the first page make for a very good blog theme! It’s just so useful to scroll down and find what you are looking for.
I agree! I’m often surprised when I upload my photos of butterflies…you really can’t see everything unless you looked at a photo…I always thought that small ones are not interesting at all…I was so wrong…
I was also surprised how many species live in my small country…about 179 species. My country is the size of 7,827 sq miles…I hope I will photograph them all someday :)
Mom, yes the pattern is different for sexes. I’ve put the sex under each photo…perhaps that doesn’t come through on your reader, but it is here on the page if you look. Which do you like best?
I love the male with his wings closed but I think overall I like the female. Why? I’m fascinated that those spots/stripes are so perfectly straight lined. Most often the pattern will be rather curved in a butterfly wing pattern but her’s are as straight across as a ruler. Ah! The Maker! Always surprises me with variety.
That is the one thing I love most about chasing butterflies…the variety. The Maker is incredibly creative and whimsical and a genius, eh? I like the males because there are only a couple of the species in this group that are different from the females, so I get excited when I find one of those. But I know what you mean about the lines.
Upper side of body brown and lower side white, very interesting. And the lower male wings side is redish, must say I am fascinated <3
Ciao
Sid

Question: Do the stripes indicate sex and if so, which is which?
